Hazel Jane was only three years old when an outbreak of scarlet fever struck her family. She caught her, her parents caught it, and her older brother caught it as well. Only Hazel Jane recovered. Now orphaned, her future looked very uncertain.

However, in the town which she lived there was an older couple – a retired knight and his wife – who had always wanted to have children but were never able to. They decided to take care of Hazel Jane and raise her as their own. The decision to adopt one orphan eventually led to adopting four more and the house was always filled with the sound of children which made the new parents very happy.

Hazel Jane had a fairly normal and pleasant childhood. The only really unpleasant thing about it was her great struggles to learn how to read. While she seemed smart enough, it took her a long time to be able to grasp written language. Eventually she became good at being able to hide the fact that her reading level was so low, especially given that her verbal skills were quite evident as she could be quite the chatterbox. She also has an excellent memory and can recall almost everything that she hears. And so she found ways to get around reading and writing in her daily life.

At present, her reading skills are somewhat better than her writing skills, and she can make due with both when words aren’t too big. She is also very slow at both reading and writing.

One of Hazel Jane’s favourite activities in the world was to listen to her father’s stories about being a knight. She loved the idea of honour and valour and because of them she decided that one day she was going to marry a knight and than they would have sons who would be knights because even though there were classes above knighthood, there was nothing she could think of that was better than a knight. Not in her heart of hearts at least.

Hazel Jane was shocked when the testers came and revealed she had the potential to be a mage. She had never even though of going to Everthorne, beyond games of make believe with her brothers and sister. She never even though of leaving the town which she had grown up in. At first the thought terrified her and she begged to be allowed to not go. However, as this was not allowed, she realized she had to make the best of it. And so Hazel Jane summoned up her inner knight and bravely headed off into the unknown, uncertain what she would find (and hoping to God that no one would figure out her reading issues).

Hazel Jane would be described by almost anyone who knew her as a very sweet girl. She is almost always smiling or laughing and is very rarely mean to anyone (except her brothers, but they deserve it). When she is feeling down, it is very obvious to everyone, because she does wear her emotions on her sleeve, however more often than not she is happy, as she has had a good life for the most part. One thing that she does sometimes get quite sad about is thinking about her birth family, but she does not do this often as she definitely feels blessed to have her parents and siblings who are her family just as much as her biological family was.

Hazel Jane can be a bit of a dreamer and can get a bit lost in her thoughts at times, but usually she does pay good attention when someone is speaking to her (provided she notices that they are). She also is very vocal about her dreams, letting pretty much everyone know about them, whether they want to or not. She is very passionate about anything involving knights, as she completely idolizes her father and certainly romanticizes what he and others have done as well.

Most of the time, Hazel Jane seems very confident about herself. However she has always been a bit ashamed and nervous about her difficulties with written language and she is terrified that people will think that she is stupid because of it. She definitely does care about the opinions of others, even though part of her wishes she didn’t.

Hazel Jane is a pretty girl and quite cute, though not really the type one would call beautiful. She has medium-length brown hair and brown eyes in which her emotions can be easily read. She is just below average height and has a slim build. She has a fair number of freckles over her body due to a childhood spent mostly outdoors. She wears simple but well-made clothes as befits her station in life and prefers light, bright colours.
